Breaking It Down

The product experts at LivingWell Stores are here to help you select the perfect lift chair to make your life more comfortable and convenient. These experts have already helped you by identifying the Best Selling Lift Chair brand – Pride Mobility.

Let’s start with understanding common terms you will encounter as you read about lift chairs:

Lift – as it relates to the chair, mechanically raises the sitter to a standing position. All of our Lift Chairs do this.

  • 2-Position – The chair incline adjusts to 2 positions: sitting and reading, which has a slight incline and is not only great for reading, but for watching television, working on your tablet and socializing with family and friends.
  • 3-Position – The chair incline adjusts to 3 positions: Sitting, reading, and reclined. The reclined position is sometimes called a napping position since it isn’t a full recline, and is also great for meditating.
  • Infinite Position – In addition to the 3 positions described above, the infinite position means that the back support and footrest move independently to achieve a variety of positions, including sleeping.
  • Zero gravity – A position achievable on the Infinite Position chair to position your thighs and legs higher than your torso.
  • Trendelenburg Position – Similar to the Infinite Position, but with the added capability of raising your feet higher than your head. Relaxing in this position may be recommended by your physician in cases of certain respiratory or circulatory medical conditions.
  • Foot Extension – Included with all of our Lift Chairs. The foot extension positions can vary by chair type, as described above, to achieve specifically position legs, thighs or feet higher than the head when reclining.

Use your new-found knowledge of terms to ponder these questions as you continue to refine your lift chair search.

  1. Why are you shopping for a lift chair? Are you replacing or upgrading an existing lift chair, replacing a recliner or adding to existing seating? Has your physician recommended a lift chair as part of a medical regimen?

Understanding the “Why” will help ensure you don’t overlook important features and functions. If you select a model strictly on cost you risk disappointment if the chair does not meet your long-term needs.

  1. Who will be using it? Is the chair for yourself or for a loved one? Is the person fully mobile, or do they have mobility limitations? Will they use the chair for relaxing, reading and watching television, or will they also need to sleep in the chair? Will delivery and assembly assistance be required?

As you learned from lift chair terminology, not all chairs are suitable for all needs. If the chair could be used for sleeping, be sure to include chairs that recline to the Infinity Position; but if you just plan to nap in the chair, a 3-position chair could meet your needs.

  1. Aggravation-free delivery and installation requirements. Do you work out at the gym just so you can move large boxes from your front doorstep to where your chair will be positioned? Or perhaps you are purchasing the chair for a loved one in another area and cannot be there to receive the delivery. If so, one of our inside delivery ($49.95) or inside delivery/pre-assembled ($199.95) options is for you.
  2. Space where the chair will be located. Consider chair dimensions such as height, width, weight, minimum distance from the wall, and overall length when fully extended. All of these dimensions are listed for each chair model. Click here to check out an example of chair specifications.
  3. Are your physical dimensions unique – are you short/tall/large? Part 2 of this series goes into more details about how to measure for a lift chair. Just know that when you land on our lift chair webpage, use our filter options to select chairs by weight capacity (your body weight). As you review individual chairs also look at the seat, back, height and overall length dimensions.
  4. Seat cover materials – The choices are endless depending on your needs, décor, and budget. Because there are so many choices and some options affect which fabric you choose, we recommend you contact a real, live customer care representative to discuss your options. Our contact telephone number is 1-800-704-8432.
  5. Your budget – We listed this consideration last so that when you estimate your budget, you do so with all of the previous considerations in mind. We recommend that you explore our lift chair models with all of the preceding features to get an idea of what budget to set for your chair. Your budget should allow for convenience options and inside delivery and assembly if that option is important to you.
