Time to Winterize Your Power Mobility Scooter Battery
Happy Holidays, Customers! It’s getting cold up north, and we wanted to give you some information on caring for your Mobility Scooter Batteries during the winter season.
KEEP IT WARM!
It is very important for you to keep your batteries stored in a warm, temperature-controlled environment. If you are planning to keep your scooter in storage over the winter, bring the batterie(s) inside and keep them charged in order to not jeopardize your warranty.
Scooter batteries perform best in temperatures between 50 and 75 degrees. During cold weather (October to April) and in other geographies where temperatures can drop below 40 degrees, scooter batteries must be stored in a room temperature environment.
Here’s some more TIPS for taking good care of your batteries:
- If you are putting your scooter in storage because you do not plan to use it, batteries must be disconnected and brought into a room temperature environment. Once inside, each battery must be connected to a trickle charger to preserve their life, ensure they're ready for use in the spring and preserve your battery warranty.
- If you are using your scooter during the cold weather months, you can expect it to have much shorter range. This means the scooter may not go as far on a battery charge and/or they may have other scooter issues due to the cold.
- Scooter batteries must be connected to the charger even when the scooter is not being used. Most chargers will automatically cycle on when the battery charge rate dips down below 95% of full charge and then turn off when the battery is over 98% charged.
We recommend “trickle charging” your batteries when they are off the scooter over the winter. It's true that certain types of trickle chargers, like those that might be used for a car battery, wouldn't be appropriate for your scooter batteries.
