Power Mobility Troubleshooting Checklist

We’re so sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your power mobility product! Most often when a customer is having trouble, we can get them going again the fastest by following these troubleshooting steps and then speaking by phone.

We’ll need your help to get you going again as quickly as possible. If you’re not able to follow the steps here, you’ll need a neighbor, family member or caregiver to help.

These steps are designed to identify the most common scooter issues and will often restore your power mobility device to proper operation.  If these steps don’t get you moving again, we will need to speak with you by by phone when you are near the device.

What do the Lights on your battery charger mean?

All battery chargers have a status light that changes colors from red to green and may blink to tell you what it’s doing to the battery. Once connected to the battery, the charger “reads” the battery status.

For chargers with two lights, here is what the second light means:

SOLID RED: the battery is substantially discharged and the charger is “bulk charging” it.

FLASHING GREEN: the battery is charged to about 80 pct and so the charge rate has slowed to a trickle.

SOLID GREEN: The battery is fully charged.

CHARGING STATUS LIGHT DOESN'T COME ON or is BLINKING GREEN/RED: The battery cannot be charged. This is usually  because of a blown fuse or because the battery is too old and will no longer charge.

For chargers with one light, here is what the light means:

ILLUMINATED IN ANY COLOR:  the charger is connected to a working wall-socket.

RED (sometimes appears as YELLOW): The battery is substantially discharged and the charger is “bulk charging” it.

SOLID GREEN: The battery is fully charged.

SECTION 1: BEFORE CALLING LIVING WELL STORES

READ EACH STEP BEFORE PROCEEDING AND FOLLOW THEM IN THIS EXACT ORDER. DO NOT SKIP A STEP!

  1. Turn off your mobility device and remove the key from your scooter.  If your device doesn’t require a key, confirm that the scooter or powerchair is turned off.
  2. Plug the battery charger directly into a wall socket. Do not use an extension cord.
  3. Confirm that there’s an illuminated light appearing on the charger. If there’s no light on your charger, check to make sure the electrical wall socket you’ve plugged it into is working by plugging some other appliance such as a table lamp, vacuum cleaner, etc., into the socket.  If you confirm the socket is working, then skip down to section 2 below.
  4. Plug the charger into the charging port on your product’s battery pack. If the battery pack doesn’t have a charging socket or your power mobility product does not use a battery pack, then plug the charging cord into the usual charging socket on your power mobility product.
  5. Charge the battery for at least eight hours OR until the light on your battery charger shows the battery as fully charged. If it doesn’t ever show fully charged or if the charging status light behaves differently than any of the ways described in the box above, go to Section 2: “GETTING READY TO CONTACT LIVING WELL STORES”, below.
  6. With a fully charged battery, disconnect the battery charger from the power mobility device and from the wall.
  7. With nobody sitting on/in the power mobility device, and with the mobility device STILL turned off, give it a firm push with your hand. If the device rolls freely, locate the drive/neutral levers on the rear of your mobility device. Every power mobility product has one or two of these levers and they are usually red or yellow. Some are plainly visible and some are tucked underneath. Move the lever(s) to their other position often labeled, “drive”, “operate” or similar words.
  8. With the lever(s) in the Drive position, push the scooter/chair with your hand again.  If it does not roll – proceed to next step #9. If it DOES still roll freely, move to SECTION 2: GETTING READY TO CONTACT LIVING WELL STORES
  9. Sit down on the scooter/chair, insert the key and/or turn the scooter/chair on. If the lights on the control panel come on, move to the next step. If they don’t light up skip down to Section 1-A “MY SCOOTER/POWER CHAIR DOESN’T LIGHT UP”. If it lights up but beeps or is flashing lights, skip down to Section 1-B “MY SCOOTER/POWERCHAIR IS BLINKING OR BEEPING”.
  10. If your mobility device has a speed control such as a knob, turn it to the slowest speed.
  11. Confirm that you have space in front of and behind you.
  12. Squeeze and hold the throttle paddle or if it’s operated with a joystick, push and hold the joystick forward.

If your power mobility device is moving, your scooter or power chair is now working properly.

If your power mobility product is NOT moving, despite the above steps, move to SECTION 2: “GETTING READY TO CONTACT LIVING WELL STORES”

Section 1– A: MY SCOOTER/POWER CHAIR DOESN’T LIGHT UP

If, after completing all 12 of the "BEFORE CALLING LIVING WELL STORES" steps above, your scooter doesn’t light up, perform these steps:

  1. Remove the key from your scooter/power chair.
  2. Confirm that the charger is not plugged into the scooter/powerchair
  3. Locate the circuit breaker on your product. It could be a rubber dome-like button that looks like it could be a light. It could be on the front of the battery pack or on top of the rear deck of the scooter. In a few cases, it could be beneath the plastic housing where the batteries are.  In all cases, it’s a black button that has popped out. Reset the circuit breaker by firmly pressing in on the button. If it was tripped, you should get a satisfying click and it should stay in.
  4. Go back up to Section 1: Before Calling Living Well Stores and perform steps 6-12.

Your scooter or power chair is now working.

If your scooter/power chair is still not working, proceed to Section 2:“GETTING READY TO CONTACT LIVING WELL STORES”.

Section 1-B: MY SCOOTER/POWER CHAIR IS BLINKING AND/OR BEEPING

If, after completing the 12 steps described in BEFORE CALLING LIVING WELL STORES above and your scooter or power chair lights up but is beeping or flashing some light(s) on the control panel, do the following:

  1. Closely listen to the beeping or observe the blinking light(s) on the control panel. You will note that the beeping/flashing is actually in a pattern.
  2. Count the flashes or beeps. For example, it might beep/flash three times, pause and then beep/flash three times and continue this pattern until you turn the scooter/power chair off. With pen and paper, write down the pattern you observed.

The troubleshooting section of your owner’s manual will tell you what the meaning is of the particular pattern you’re observing. Depending on the pattern we can tell you what to do next. If you don’t have your owner’s manual, you can find them on our website or by searching “Owner’s manual for [brand/model] in Google.
