Achieving Personal Comfort in an Adjustable Base Bed

When you think of comfort in bed, do you think your mattress is either the cure or the culprit? With traditional fixed-based beds, the mattress is about all you can control on the bed.

On an adjustable base bed, the options to achieve personal comfort are extensive. This article will talk about how to improve your comfort on Living Well Stores’ Leggett and Platt adjustable base beds using some of the bed's features.

Six Ways to Achieve Better Sleep

There are two important features that are key to your comfort in bed. The first is the positioning of your head, upper body, and legs. The second is lumbar support, an option on some beds.

Body positioning, including the independent Pillow Tilt, is one of the best features about the Leggett and Platt line of beds because they are one of the few manufacturers who offer that feature. Not only can you adjust your legs and upper body, but you can also independently tilt the upper portion of the bed supporting your pillow. This extra adjustment contributes to improved reading, working on a computer, and similar activities.

In the graphic below, check out the position adjustments you can achieve using either the wireless remote control or the free smartphone app to position your head, upper body, and legs, and then save your favorite positions.

Question: What do astronauts and comfortable sleeping have in common?

Answer: Achieving zero gravity.

When rockets are launched into space astronauts experience times of extreme pressure on their bodies as the rocket defies gravity to escape the Earth’s atmosphere to achieve zero gravity. Engineers have worked out how to best distribute the pressure across their bodies so no single body part is bearing all that weight.

When it comes to a sleeping position, zero gravity means positioning your bed to minimize pressure on your torso by redistributing your weight. The result is that your head and legs are slightly raised above your heart and stomach in the zero-gravity sleep position. Benefits of sleeping in this position included reduced snoring, less stress on your body, and achieving REM – the best part of the sleep cycle - more quickly.

People with low back issues may select one of our beds with lumbar support. Low back pain is one of the most common reasons for job-related disabilities and can affect your sleep quality. By using the lumbar support feature, muscles are better-supported so that they can relax and heal while you sleep. Combine lumbar support with slightly bent knees to truly redistribute your body weight from your low back across more of your torso. The result is reduced contact pressure over this area of your body, which in turn aids in a deeper, more relaxing sleep and possibly improved back health.

Additional convenience features found in our Leggett and Platt adjustable base beds include: a wireless remote control or smartphone app to adjust your position, under-bed lighting, and massage, as well as charging ports built into the frame. Once you get comfy-cozy in your bed, you don’t have to leave! You can save multiple favorite positions so that you don’t have to reset them each time you get back in bed.

Another feature not found in most adjustable base beds is space-saving Wallhugger® technology, developed by Leggett and Platt. With many adjustable bed bases, as the foundation raises to adjust to the desired angle, you move forward away from the wall and your nightstand. Wallhugger adjustable base beds adjust the base of the bed as you change your position. You can easily reach your glasses, water glass, and anything else on your nightstand, while your bed is in your favorite position.

All this talk of getting comfy cozy in bed is making me sleepy. Let me recap the features that help you get the most enjoyment and sleep from an adjustable base bed so I can go take a nap:

  • Body positioning that includes Pillow Tilt and Zero-Gravity sleep position.
  • Lumbar support that redistributes pressure from your low back.
  • No excuse to get out of bed once you get comfortable – a wireless remote, massage, lighting control and charging ports.
